Mary Church Terrell's early life
Mary Church Terrell was born in Memphis Tennessee 1863 . Her father was born a slave but her mother was born free. They were poor but Mary's dad bought and sold land and became very rich. The Mary grew up in was very big with many rooms that were also big. She used play outside in her garden naming the floors in there. In 1870 unfair laws started being passed. Marry's parents were separated. Mary's mother made her own business. Both of her parents had money but not enough to keep her safe. So they decided to send her to Ohio.
Eduecation
Mary went to the North and went to good school and was safe. She was very liked by her teachers and classmates. She grew up very smart. She graduated at the top of her classes in 1879. Most of her friend's left after high school and got married and didn't go to college but Marry went to college. She went to Oberlin college in Ohio. She went to college for men,women,whites, and blacks. She enjoyed learning about the past and present the most. In 1884 she graduated college.
Adulthood
In 1888 Mary's dad sent her to Europe. She studied music and great writings. In 1890 Mary came back to the united states. She had many job choices to choose from. She was asked to be a teacher in Alabama,New York, and Oberlin college. Robert Heberton Terrell asked Marry to marry him and she said yes. Marry worked for African Americans and womens right group. In the 1890's black and white women didn't have many rights. They weren't aloud to vote they weren't aloud to hold public office. And the weren't aloud to go or work at some schools because of segregation. In 1895 Mary was asked to serve for the washinton D.C school board.
Mary's family

Her parents were in another state working so they could send her money to eat and go to school.
Job/Carreer
Mary's job was teaching. She got asked to teach at Oberlin, Alabama, and New York. But then she met a young teacher that worked in Washington D.C he asked her to marry him and she said yes. So instead she started teaching in Washinton D.C. She also worked for a equal rights for African Americans and women. After Mary was asked to work on the Washington D.C school board of eduacation. She mostly worked for making schools better. One law she wanted passed was boys and girls had to go to school until atleast the age of fourteen. But the men in her group laughed and the law was not passed.
What was she known for?
She was known for being one of the first blacks to graduate college. She also was good friends with Fredrick Douglas when she was in college. Later that year after Graduating college she became a teacher. She was asked to work at many schools but she picked one in Washington D.C because her husband was teaching there.
