Early YearsJohn Davison Rockefeller ( rock - ah fell - er ) was born on July 8th, 1839 in Richford, NY. He was not born to a rich family. He earned a total of $45 dollars each year as an allowance. He had earned extra money by selling turkeys, potatoes, and candy. For education, he went to Owego Academy when he was young. A few years later, when he was 16, he got his 1st job as an assistant bookkeeper. He wanted to skip high school and attend a business college. So, he skipped high school and went to Chancellor University. When he was 20 years old, he got a business partner that sold goods. The company grossed about $450,000 in their 1st year. But then he decided to take chances, and bought a oil refinery in Cleveland. That is where his business life began.

Business Life and AdulthoodJohn D. Rockefeller's oil career began just as he got married to Laura Spelman Rockefeller on September 8th, 1864. They had 5 children whose names were John D. Rockefeller Jr., Edith Rockefeller, Alta Rockefeller, Elizabeth Rockefeller, and Alice Rockefeller who died in infacy. So, once his 1st oil refinery grew to be the largest in the area, he then bought all of the other oil companies in the oil industry to create a monopoly. A monopoly happens when one company buys or destroys other companies in the same industry. Also, when one company has no other competition in the same industry. Soon, he became a billionaire. That is where his business life ended, and his philanthropy life began.

Philanthropy John D. Rockefeller's philanthropy life began after he got charged against court for having a monopoly. So, he followed the steps of Andrew Carnegie who turned out to be a philanthropist after his steel business. John D. Rockefeller became a philanthropist. He gave out money to children like the picture above shows. He got the spirit of giving by his mother. His mother taught all of her children to tithe, which is to give 10% of your earnings to church even though Rockefeller made only $45 a year. Since that happened, he donated over $530 billion to medical charities. He had pretty much nothing else to do with his money so he put it to a good use. Then he passed away on May 23rd, 1937 .

Tribute For Rockefeller
John D. Rockefeller should be honored because he has done so much to shape America's parents to what it is today. He has done so much to children at the time and to charities that help support other people. Not to mention, that he also provided oil to lamps (lamp oil), cars, and many more things. Congress had passed the anti - monopoly laws. That might not be a good thing but it had to be done. After all of this, he has to be honored. So, I will be making a tribute to Rockefeller. My tribute is called "The Rockefinery" (rock - uh- fine - ah - ri). This will be located in Cleveland, Ohio because that was where his first oil refinery was. It will be a site where people can come and visit and see how the oil was dug. There will be 2 oil tanks and some workers around it. On the left side, there will be a sculpture of the Rockefeller Center which is in New York (the real one), and on the left is a stone box that has quotes on it. There will be little cards that have 1 of his quotes on it. On the sides of the oil tank there will be mud and dirt on the platform. There will also be a road paved near the Rockefeller Center and the stone box. The Rockefinery will be about 1/4 of a mile long and 1/4 of a mile wide.
